Echos of eternity
"Echoes of Eternity" explores the intersection of invention, discovery and natural specimens through totemic conceptual forms. The sculpture reflects humanity's complex relationship with nature, characterized by efforts to control and subdue it, often at the expense of its intrinsic beauty and freedom. The work examines the cyclical nature of human creation and decay, our fascination with natural history, and the allure of material desires.
The gilded totem evokes a sense of wonder and timelessness, reminiscent of a mythical “fountain of youth.” Through its narrative power, the totem encourages reflection on our deep connection with the natural world and the inherent responsibilities of creation. The stalactites symbolize forgotten items left to decay as the totem melts - representing the passage of time and the notion of obsolescence within in the context of climate change.
Soledad employs repurposed materials and found objects to comment on contemporary life. By juxtaposing discarded electronics with natural elements, such as animal skeletons and old cassettes, the work creates a space ripe for exploration and unexpected insights. Drawing on her background as a jeweler, the artist applies gold foil, an ancient technique rich with associations of divinity, immortality, and power. The intentional imperfections serve as a deliberate counterpoint to mass production, reflecting a nuanced critique of contemporary consumer culture.
